Bathrooms
No, it's not the most romantic room in the house, but it can be the only place a person can get some privacy. If done right, it can be a sanctuary.
The Bathroom
The most appealing thing in bathrooms is use of space and good storage. It’s okay if a bathroom is small, if the space is used well. If you’re redoing a shower stall with tile, have your contractor build in a bench, and create nooks for shampoos and soaps. Consider accent tile that gives the space visual interest, without locking you in to a particular color scheme.
Subway tile is back, and now broadly available in both opaque and glass. It’s a terrific look, and goes well in both old and newer homes. The traditional white is great in old homes, coupled with a black pinstripe accent. Subway tile comes in many materials, including tumbled marble, and colored glass.
The flooring in the bathroom is an important consideration. Too many bathrooms have gorgeous marble tile floors, that could injure a person if they slip getting out of the shower. And while carpet eliminates the slip-and-fall risk, harbors dampness and mold, and over time, the subfloor will rot without you even realizing it. When changing out your bathroom floors, be sure to look for floor products that have some texture to avoid accidents as well as being easy to clean.
Most new toilets are now low-flush. Look at Consumer Reports and find out what they consider to be a best buy is when you’re making the change. You have no idea how annoying a low-flush toilet that doesn’t work very well is until you have one.
I am one of those people who loves the pink tile bathrooms of the Eisenhower era. I’m sure part of it is because I grew up in one. I understand, however, that in spite of their historical significance, they no longer have broad appeal. To see more pink bathrooms, click on this link: Pink Bathrooms!
